The Torah describes Succos as the holiday of joy. How can we be sure that the holiday of joy is really joyous? Joy hardly seems to be something that we can be instructed to follow. But, following Yom Kippur, when a person has the opportunity to be cleansed of sin, it is a given that a person will be joyous. When we focus on the great gift of forgiveness that we have been granted–how can we not rejoice? Succos is also the holiday of gathering our crops from the field. Contemplating the material gifts we have been given by G-d also brings great joy. Indeed, these are recipes that naturally bring joy to a person.
